TOUAREG NAMESAKE

The Tuareg people, also spelled Twareg or Touareg, are a large Berber ethnic group that principally inhabit the Saharan interior and North Africa.

Traditionally nomadic sheep pastors, they are a semi-nomadic people who practice Islam, and are descended from the indigenous Berber communities of Northern Africa. Tuareg people are credited with the spreading of Islam in North Africa and the adjacent Sahel region.[15]

Since prehistoric times, Tuareg peoples have been organizing caravans for trading across the Sahara desert.

One of the most important trade routes across the Sahara was to the west - the Taghaza Trail - from the oasis town of Aoudaghost to the Atlantic coast.
